PROGRAM PROFILE
Learning About Lobbying in D.C.

Two recent graduates, Maggie Bowden (Virginia) and Autumn Hansen (Idaho) accompanied International President Linda Johnson and Betty Quick, our NPC Delegate and Chairman of the NPC Conference, this spring to encourage important legislation affecting Greeks. The Gamma Phi Beta Foundation agreed to provide funding for Maggie and Autumn to join collegians from other National Panhellenic Conference and Interfraternity groups in Washington D.C. They learned about networking and lobbying, specifically with regard to the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act that would allow fraternity and sorority house corporation boards the same tax-deductible status as universities.

"The experience overall was amazing," said Maggie. "It reconfirmed my belief that Gamma Phi Beta is an organization constantly connecting established, passionate, successful women and working for their betterment. In addition, meeting Senators and Representatives from around the country and gaining greater insight into how the American political process works was an eye-opening experience. I am so thankful to Gamma Phi for sponsoring me."

Members are encouraged to write to their representatives and senators to help ensure passage of this legislation with the language that meets our objectives. Click on the "Letters to Congress" link at www.gammaphibeta.org for more information.
