Annual Campaign - Best Direct Mail Package

Beta Theta Pi Foundation

This package, with the theme “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit” enabled members and “Friends of BETA” to sponsor undergraduates to attend one of the four sessions of the award winning John and Nellie Wooden Institute for Men of Principle and The Donald W. English Beta Wilderness Challenge. The campaign included an in-house package which included a REAL ACORN – a small seed that – if planted and nurtured has the ability to grow, thrive, and provide shade for generations to come. The appeal resulted in $39,393 in donations and sponsored 83 students to attend The Institute and 8 to participate in the Wilderness Challenge. At a total cost of just $2,042 the cost was only .05 per dollar raised.

The winner of this award conducted a 6 week calling campaign during which over 2 thousand parents were contacted. This effort to obtain new donors AND provide a way for parents to show their support of their daughter’s membership found success in that 605 parents pledged a gift. A special slingback backpack was given to those parents whose gift totaled $100 or more. The follow up of 2,500 post-call mailers resulted in 34 gifts with an average gift of over $96. The vendor partner commented “we ran one of the best parent campaigns we have seen this Spring”. Success was such that an additional 200 slingback backpacks had to be ordered in the middle of the campaign. Where an average parent campaign cost per dollar raised usually falls between .40 and .45 the ratio for this campaign was .36 per dollar raised.

For the Best Student Development Effort, our winner launched a campaign to educate their collegiate membership about the importance of the foundation in supporting the organization. With the help of their vendor partner our winner sent an engaging text-message via email to each of over 10 thousand collegians. A coordinated website provided information about the campaign, tracked the results, and linked collegians to the e-solicitation and the organizations home page. Chapter officers were engaged at leadership academy and received follow-up emails encouraging participation in the campaign. The resulting effort was the most successful student development effort to date with a net income of $26, 500. With increased participation over the previous efforts at nearly 5% the cost per dollar raised was only .28.

Our winner of Best Alumnae Development Effort, celebrated the end of a capital campaign in grand style! The organization’s Trustees renewed the emphasis on building their annual fund. Their giving society was celebrating its 10th year of existence and through a generous challenge grant each new member of the society would have their $1000 gift matched at one hundred percent. Current members of the 1895 society became so enthusiastic about the possibilities presented by the grant, that they formed telephone trees, email networks, and note-writing committees. These activities were completely spontaneous and not solicited by the Foundation staff. This effort by Chi Omega sisters and families is representative of the finest in alumnae spirit and support.

Major Gift Campaign - Best Development Effort

Kappa Kappa Gamma Foundation

Our winner for the Best Development Effort realized that in order to sustain the long-term needs of the Leadership Academy the members needed to support the creation of significant permanent endowment. The campaign was a 5 million initiative and is the organizations first foray into major gifts fundraising since 1989. Seeking a lead gift our winner approached one of the most heralded families within the organization. After learning about the desire of the organization to endow the academy in perpetuity one of the women responded “When I was an undergraduate member I was amazed that someone saw leadership potential in me that I didn’t’ see in myself.” After the meeting the family foundation responded with a $2.5 million challenge grant. After only 17 months into the campaign our winner, still in the quiet phase has surpassed its original goal of 70% at a cost of only .15 per dollar raised. Net income has totaled over 1.8 million dollars.

Along with their vendor partner Sigma Alpha Mu created a piece that will indeed be a source of pride for their 100th birthday and many years to come.

The “Kate Campaign” used one girl to symbolize the thousands of individuals with vision loss who have been helped through the efforts of the Delta Gamma Foundation. Tiny stat cards also showed her infectious smile. More than 7500 of these cards were used for thank you note inserts, founders days, as well as distribution at functions which included non-members. Kate was also featured in the email campaign as well as in Young Alumnae Flash, which was an e-newsletter for members up to age 35.

We recognize an organization who has taken leadership workshops to new heights---literally!. Through a partnership (created by a donor gift) with the National Outdoor Leadership School our winner has been able to bring a world-renowned outdoor educator to the table to provide for the continued success and education of their members. Through a generous original grant that has endowed the program, and the continual support of donors and friends the Donald W. English Wilderness Challenge features backpacking, hiking, rock-climbing, camping, and mountain navigation. This physically demanding experience allows participants to learn leadership, self-awareness, communication, an array of outdoor skills, and most importantly, how the Ritual applies to their daily lives.

Our winner for Best Special Event brought together three vital elements that contribute to the future success of the organization. Exposure of undergraduates to personal interaction and networking opportunities, Reinforcement to alumni of the quality of the young men that continue to be attracted to the organization, and finally, the opportunity to raise significant dollars to support the programs of the Fraternity. The seminar brought undergraduates and alumni together for a weekend of brainstorming, dreaming, and planning for action. The Power of 7 Seminar asked alumni to donate 7 thousand dollars and sponsor an undergraduate to attend. Over the last three years the event has raised well over 100 thousand dollars for the annual fund. The testimonials that are coming out of the seminar speak to the passion and dedication of the fraternity alumni and the undergraduates whom they sponsor.

Our winner for Best New Development Idea counted themselves fortunate to have donors who choose to honor and remember their friends through gifts to the foundation. In an effort to encourage this type of giving the organization introduced a line of honor, celebration, and memorial cards. Rather than utilizing letterhead the cards were created with meaningful quotes and images for a variety of occasions and donors could personalize their message on the back. The cards are had addressed and mailed to the donors. During the 2006-07 Fiscal year the number of cards was over 2 thousand. To date in this fiscal year that number has jumped to nearly 4 thousand cards. Additional cards are being developed for weddings and holiday season.
