The Inner Shield is Phi Delta Theta's newest way of communicating with alumni and friends of the Fraternity. It is simply a brief electronic newsletter that will be published every other month.

Each issue will feature an alumnus profile and other timely news and information about Fraternity and Foundation activities that I hope you will find interesting and entertaining.

The electronic newsletter is free to every member with an e-mail address and a member can unsubscribe at any time.

I hope you enjoy the first issue.

Yours in the Bond,

Rusty Richardson
President
Ken Maikowski, University of Utah, '86

When Ken Maikowski, University of Utah, '86, joined a group of alumni in establishing an endowed scholarship fund named for one of his chapter's deceased members, he had no idea that it would start him down the road towards becoming a member of the Founders Club ($10,000 lifetime giving) of the Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation.

It all began with a fundraising effort in the late 1980s when an alumnus from his chapter, J. Willard Marriott, passed away. The Marriott family had proposed a plan to create an endowed scholarship for members of Utah Alpha. They offered to match the amount if the alumni could raise $25,000.
The Accolade
Building Better Members, Building Better Chapters

The Phi Delta Theta Educational Foundation was recently recognized by the North-American Interfraternity Conference for the Best Use of a Foundation Grant for its support of The Accolade. The Accolade is Phi Delta Theta's member development program that seeks to build better members by developing the brothers outside the college classroom.

Personal development activities including goal-setting, time management, character development and career development are combined with chapter activities such as educational programs, retreats and activities involving The Bond and the three Cardinal Principles.
