Fostering Peace through Academic Discussion
On February 20, 2007 the University of Missouri-Columbia Peace Studies Program awarded four members of the faculty and Columbia community with awards recognizing their efforts in making the world a more positive place. Russel P. Breyfogle Jr., Beloit '54, was awarded the Lifetime Achievement in Peacemaking Award for 2007.
The Peace Studies program promotes individuals to seek an understanding and appreciation of others' beliefs and perspectives through conversation and academic study of controversial topics. The program is a collaborative effort. The staff faculty is composed of members with an interest in peace studies who, in most cases, teach cross-listed/interdisciplinary courses.
Brother Breyfogle is the current President of the Friends of Peace Studies organization. The group supports the University of Missouri-Columbia Peace Studies Program in its effort to reduce deadly conflict and promote justice at all levels of life. To this end, the group promotes peace education, research and action through raising financial contributions and the funding of lectures, performances and structured dialogues.
Brother Breyfogle has been active in Veterans for Peace, the Interfaith Peace Alliance, Returned Peace Corps Association, Global Action to Prevent War and International Medical Education Trust. He and his wife Susan, also a former Peace Corps volunteer, have three children and reside in Columbia.
