Fun and Friendship…

....standing alongside profitability and accountability

The words of our 2008 Achievement Award recipient, George Zimmer, Wash U, '67, are as true to ensuring success as a menswear giant as they are to being a college student in 2008! "With 18,000 men and women scattered over 1,200 locations, our corporate culture is still based on trust," Zimmer emphasized to the Chicago Convention crowd of 400 or more. "Organizational success, whether fraternity or business, flows from trust. The same trust we observed and experienced in the fraternity…on the football field, or out with our dates at parties." At ΣAM "we learned how to depend on someone as well as be dependable ourselves."

Co-founded by Zimmer in 1973, Men's Wearhouse is one of North America's largest specialty retailers of men's dress apparel. Men's Wearhouse, Moores and K&G stores carry a full selection of designer, brand name and private label suits, sport coats, furnishings and accessories. Tuxedo rentals are available in the Men's Wearhouse, Moores and MW Tux stores.

Ben Wolff, current Prior of the Phi chapter, thinks Zimmer is right on target. "The brotherhood we feel now is strong and that feeling of trust in your closest friends will last a lifetime. I see that not only in our chapter, but I apply it in my business on campus, too. But George Zimmer also reminded us that we are in the best times of our lives and that we should take advantage of it."

And just as we learn early on as ΣAM candidates that community service is at the heart of the ΣAM mission, Zimmer has also shown his belief in committing to the communities that he serves. He believes that being a socially responsible company is just as important as providing excellent customer service or quality products. That's why Men's Wearhouse is sponsoring their first annual National Suit Drive. For many unemployed men, a new suit is the first step toward a second chance. During the National Suit Drive, every one of the over 550 stores will be collecting gently used professional attire to benefit at-risk men and youth transitioning into the workforce. All clothing they receive will be distributed throughout the community by local nonprofit organizations.

"I've been fortunate. Because of my SAMMY experience, I created a business where friendship and fun stand side-by-side with profitability and accountability. So for those who have graduated, be generous to "Uncle Sammy"… and for those still in school, I'm jealous!! College was the best 4 consecutive years in my life, I guarantee it!"
