Kentucky Wesleyan – ΣAM Grove
The Fraternity has actively engaged its chapters in celebrating our Centennial. Nathan Margolis is an alumnus leading the initiative for chapters to plan events and projects in conjunction with this historic milestone. Many chapters have begun projects. Here’s an example of a great student-driven success.
The Kentucky Wesleyan Chapter wanted to commemorate its presence on campus by constructing a beautification project that would be a permanent symbol of Sigma Alpha Mu. The chapter brainstormed ideas

for the project which eventually became the ΣAM Grove. The project started by planting three trees at the spring alumni weekend in 2003. Future trees would be planted annually to take the shape of the Octagon. The eighth tree will be planted in 2009 at the Centennial Dinner in Owensboro, KY. This idea is literally taking shape as a fitting way to commemorate the Fraternity’s 100th and the chapter’s 40th.
The grove was originally started in front of the football field because of its visible location on campus. In the Fall of 2006, the Founders Grove was relocated by the college to make room for a new parking lot. The chapter was able to work with college officials to relocate the grove. Now it is in front of the President’s House in a location that will be permanent.
To enhance the prominence of the octagonal grove, the chapter is planning on building a gazebo in the center as a gift to the college. Their chapter had eight founders in 1964, just as Sigma Alpha Mu’s founders numbered eight. Each tree will also have a plaque adorning the name of a corresponding founder. Walter Michie and Richard Grossberg, the first Prior of the Chapter, have been present to witness the planting of their respective tree.
Michael Sperling, Kentucky Wesleyan ‘69, will be present for the planting of his tree on April 25, 2009, along with Nathan Margolis and Centennial Chairman and Past Supreme Prior David Phillips.
