William Jewell College partners with Habitat for Humanity and Liberty Savings Bank to build home for Liberty family
On Tuesday, November 29, 2006, William Jewell College celebrated with Ahmed Khalil, his wife and six children who became the beneficiaries of a brand new Habitat for Humanity home. During the dedication ceremonies, Mary Pritchard and the late John Pritchard, Jr., were also commended for their part in bringing the Habitat experience to the Kansas City area. As part of the Sophomore Year Experience, second-year students (with the help of other willing student volunteers) donated their time during the spring 2006 semester to help build the four-bedroom, two-story house located on the northwest corner of Missouri and Pine Streets. Some students volunteered during spring break as well.

With financial backing from Liberty Savings Bank and a helping hand from local volunteers, many WJC students contributed a significant number of hours in sweat equity swinging hammers and lifting heavy loads as they framed walls, hung siding and drywall, painted, roofed and performed many other laborious tasks required to build a home. Many students expressed heart-felt sentiments and learned valuable life lessons while being a part of a very special opportunity to assist with providing a local Liberty family a greatly needed home.

Aside from participating in this rewarding experience, there were other opportunities for Jewell students who participated in the build. Some students had the opportunity to meet U.S. Congressman Sam Graves when he paid a visit to the home to witness the impact of Habitat for Humanity and the contributions students were making in the community. In addition to Congressman Graves visit, students were also invited to participate in the house dedication ceremony with the family, local City of Liberty officials and representatives from Liberty Savings Bank and Habitat for Humanity. |
According to Dr. Rick Winslow, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, the Sophomore Year Experience focuses on two institutional imperatives related to sophomore level students. First, immerses students in an active and directed program of service to the larger community, which is one of the key elements of the college’s mission. As part of the Sophomore Year Experience, sophomore students construct a Habitat for Humanity House for a Liberty family from the ground up. A second emphasis of the program focuses on the specific developmental needs of sophomore

To better assist the developmental needs of sophomore students, William Jewell is developing new programs and services targeted at students during their second year of college. These services include the designation of a college staff member to work specifically for and with sophomores. The college is providing additional advising opportunities for sophomores, in addition to more focused opportunities for interaction between students and faculty. |
