1940s


Russell Newport '43 was featured in an article entitled "The Double Life of Russell Newport" in the Lifeway publication, Mature Living. The article talked about Russell's business ventures in the Springfield and Branson, Mo. areas along with his famous singing career. Russell has retired from his business ventures (owning Ben Franklin stores, a bowling alley, etc.) but continues to sing.

1970s

Gary Barnes '75 was selected as a member of the 2007 "Best of the U.S." This honor represents 120 professions and specialties in all 50 states, compiled through a survey of professional qualifications.

Brian Humes '78 was appointed to the Midwest BankCentre Clayton (Mo.) Regional Board. Brian is a founding partner of Humes & Barrington, LLP, a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants.

1980s

Holley Powell Smothers '81 received the Western Region Middle Level Art Educator of the Year Award at the National Art Education Association's annual meeting in New York City. Holley teaches art at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Jefferson City, Mo.

David King '88 was appointed by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius to the Information Network of Kansas. The mission of this network is to provide Kansans with electronic access to information on state departments and agencies. David serves as digital branch and service manager for the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library. He has written several books and journal articles on the field of information technology, and is a frequent presenter at national information technology conferences.

1990s

David Everly '91 accepted a position with the Chicago Medical School, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science.

Brian Jamison '91 opened the Ark Bible Training Institute on Mt. Elgon in Kenya, East Africa. Brian serves as the founder and administrator of the training institute, which provides Biblical and practical training to pastors and lay leaders in the remote area of Kenya inhabited by the Saboat tribe.

Heather Dyer Jamison '97
is scheduled to release her third book, "Keeping it Real," a book designed for teen girls. Her first two books have been in print for several years. Heather has been appointed Director of the Adopt a Legacy program in Kenya, which offers sponsorship to orphans and needy children in Africa to provide them with an education, hygiene and medical supplies and housing. Brian and Heather live in Kenya with their four children.

Kristen Fairlie Smarr '91 was promoted to Director of Communications for the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. She has been at MU since 1999. She and her husband, Rusty, reside in Columbia, Mo.

Cathleen Sullivan '91 was promoted to Primary Training Consultant for Verizon Wireless' National Government Sales Team. In her new position, Cathleen will be responsible for training approximately 600 sales staff personnel nationwide. Cathleen resides in Denver, Col.

Kimberly Flowers '99 was named the Development Outreach and Communications Officer for the United States Agency for International Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

2000s

Sara Boren Luesse '01 was selected to receive the Diamond Circle Teacher of the Year award for Marion Elementary School in the Ritenour School District. Sara is currently working on her Master's of Counseling degree from the University of Missouri - St. Louis and has been accepted in the counseling honors fraternity, Chi Sigma Iota, Psi Chapter. Sara and Adam Luesse '01 reside in Kirkwood, Mo.

Ashley DeVilbiss '02 accepted the position of Student Interest Manager with the American Academy of Family Physicians, whose national headquarters are located in Leawood, Kan. This position entails managing the operations of student interest activities nationwide, advancing the specialty of Family Medicine and overseeing the pre-doctoral education. Ashley resides in Prairie Village, Kan.

Nicole Adams '03 accepted the position of Regional Affairs Manager at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Jason Chlapek '03 was named sports editor of the Sequin Gazette in Sequin, Tex.

Brandon Greason '04 received his Master's Degree in Education and Missouri teaching certification from Rockhurst University.

Chad Speer '04 received his Masters of Science degree in Health and Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Administration from Northwest Missouri State University. He has recently accepted the position of head football coach and social studies instructor at Leavenworth (Kan.) High School.

Amara Shea Evans '05 was named Performance Improvement Specialist at Carondelet Health. She was previously working in the role of Clinician II on the telemetry unit at St. Joseph Medical Center. Amara has been an active volunteer for the Hope Center, St. Vincent's Medical Drive and Heartland Church Children's Ministry.

Kelly Easley '06 was selected for the early decision admission program at the Kansas University Medical Center for the fall.

Emily Abdoler '06 and Christopher Rosson '06 were selected as finalists in the Rhodes Scholarship competition, which provides two or three years of study at Oxford University. The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international study award available to American students. Neither applicant received the award this year.

Allan Nekuda '06 was drafted in the second round by the Detroit Ignition in the 2007 Major Indoor Soccer League.
