Alumni "Return to the Nest" for Homecoming 2006
This year Jewell students proclaimed Homecoming's theme as "Return to the Nest" and alumni "flocked" back to "the Hill" to engage in many activities on Saturday, October 14th. The perfect fall day seemed like it was ordered up especially for Jewell, and many alumni families enjoyed their time walking the quad, visiting the newly renovated Yates-Gill College Union and telling their children tales of their own adventures on campus.
The campus was filled with activity. Music majors and alumni gathered in Gano Chapel to perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons during the alumni strings concert. The Chemistry Department dedicated a new lab to Dr. Marvin Dixon, retired Professor of Chemistry and the Oxbridge program welcomed back Dr. Ken Chatlos, Dr. Anne Marie Shannon, and Dr. Jim Tanner, former leaders of the Oxbridge program. During the Oxbridge reception, Dr. John Westlie introduced Dr. Ken Alpern, the current Oxbridge Senior Tutor. Several Greek events took place including the celebration of the Return of the Pink Lady, which was attended by members of Beta Sigma Omicron sorority, the predecessor to Zeta Tau Alpha. Women of Alpha Gamma Delta celebrated their 60th anniversary.
More than 220 people gathered in the renovated dining hall for a barbeque lunch before heading to Greene Stadium to watch the Cardinals battle the Yellowjackets. Other highlights included the crowning of the Homecoming King and Queen and the 2nd annual golf cart parade.
Later that evening, more than 340 people enjoyed the Homecoming Dinner featuring the Alumni Award Honorees and the Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center in downtown Kansas City. The dinner was followed by decade receptions at local downtown restaurants.
